I am not familiar with any social network but Facebook so I hope that I did this correctly.  I think once I become familiar with "Blog" it can be helpful to me.  For example if I am having a problem with a assignment I can post it and hopefully get a quick response, unlike email.
As far as my personal life I like it because it keeps me in constant contact with my relatives and long time friends.
